Experience

Greetings! I have a lot of teaching experience with students of many ages and needs. My teaching and related experiences include: - teaching Middle School and High School Students in Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Statistics, AP Statistics, and Pre-Calculus - teaching Mathematics GRE and MCAT preparation courses - teaching college undergraduate and graduate courses in statistics, student assessment, measurement, and survey data analysis - developing curriculum for college graduate courses - tutoring with Sylvan - scoring AP statistics exams for ETS in the summer - providing numerous types of professional development for teachers One item I want to expand on in that list is scoring AP Statistics Exams. I have done that for seven years so I am well versed in the types of items asked on the open-ended portion of the exam...the part that most students struggle with when taking the exam. When scoring an exam, I can usually tell almost immediately if the student has been taught by a teacher who has scored exams or if his/her teacher has not had that opportunity. However, please understand that Statistics AP test prep should be entered into at least two months, preferably three, in advance of the test date. A weekly session is not necessary if you decide to do this as long as the student is willing to do some homework between sessions. One or two weeks will not allow sufficient time to discuss how to construct answers, what information is critical, and other elements of that exam. Currently I am an independent consultant and conduct evaluations and statistical analysis for various grants and other projects. Although I enjoy this work, teaching, besides doing project specific training workshops for clients, is not an integral part of my daily work. I have a myriad of resources and a lot of real-world experiences to bring to students that can help them see the relevance of many of the mathematical and statistical skills they are taught in a typical classroom. I am comfortable with all ages of students, from K-12 grades (my experience, though, is primarily with grades 7-12) to post-secondary students, whether trying to pass a college entrance exam or a college course. Although I have had training and have taught probability, pre-calculus, and geometry, these are not very strong areas for me so please do not consider me if these are areas of need. Prior to a tutoring session, I will work with you to identify the topics that need to be addressed in that session so I can be sure to have any additional materials, if needed, to supplement the materials a student is already using. The more information I can get in advance to tailor the session, the more beneficial the session will be for both of us. Hope to hear from you soon! Melinda
